The powerplant was initially similar to that of the 206. The prototype 207 first flew on 11 May 1968.

Over the years, a T207 (turbocharged) model appeared, and a 207A with larger diameter propeller.

The longer tail boom results in more elevator and empennage authority, reducing the stall speed to 39 kts and increasing directional stability. The SP was developed for export markets such as Canada, South Africa and Chile where a 39 knot stall speed was required for ultralight or microlight operations. The aircraft are already flying in South Africa, Swaziland, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Chile.
The Jabiru SP cruises at 120 mph and 3.5 gallons per hour with the 2200A (80hp engine), and 135 mph , 5 gallons per hour with the 3300A (120hp engine), depending on the options selected. Jabiru have increased the Maximum Take Off Weight (MTOW) for all their kitplane models from 946lb to 1034lb. All of the Jabiru kitplane models have been structurally tested to 8.5g. The aircraft incorporates a new low profile 18.5 gallon fuel tank which increases the available storage space for baggage on top of the fuel tank. For the 3300 powered SP, a 23 gallon tank is available as an option.

After a production hiatus of twelve years, Cessna started
manufacturing a new version of the venerable 206 in 1998, with the
introduction of the newly certified 206H.
The “H” model is generally similar to the previous U206 configuration,
with a pilot entry door and a rear double clamshell door for access to
the middle and back seats. The "H" is marketed under the name
"Stationair".

The 206H is powered by a Lycoming IO-540-AC1A powerplant producing 300 hp (220 kW). The turbocharged T206H is powered by a Lycoming TSIO-540-AJ1A engine of 310 hp (230 kW).
